Wellers Auctions Sustainability Report
As the societal shift towards fostering a greener economy continues to gather pace, and sustainability becomes a core focus for corporate businesses and consumers alike we are committed to promoting sustainability and advancing the circular economy.
The Circular Economy
In recent years the goal of creating circular economies have gained huge impetus from businesses across a variety of sectors including retail, real estate, and the public sector. The circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. This process helps ensure the life cycle of products is extended. For this system to operate effectively there needs to be a fully functional secondary market in order to enable the flow of second-hand, obsolete, and surplus materials from one party to another.
Our Role in Supporting Sustainability
Auctions provide a key role in this secondary market, offering individuals and businesses a market to facilitate the flow of goods and prevent those goods otherwise ending up as landfill.
At Wellers we work alongside a range of commercial businesses and large corporations from a vast array of industries ranging from the retail and transport sectors to local government and agriculture. We enable these entities to extend the life cycles of their goods, helping them hit their sustainability objectives, secure a profit and reduce clearance costs in the process. Keeping these products within the economy helps reduce the need to produce new goods, meaning less demand for raw materials and energy.
Additionally, our off-site team works with vendors to auction goods from their premises, eliminating the need for heavy goods transport, and massively reducing our carbon emissions.
A Word from Our Managing Director, Chris Sykes:
βA further practical illustration of what we have done over the last 25 years is our association with Salvo (Latin for save). We have proudly been the major sponsor of this organisation, which has tirelessly lobbied the government to make it illegal to landfill architectural salvage materials. This practice, once common in the 1960s and 1970s, is no longer permitted. Today, recycled materials of this nature retain residual value within the demolition industry. Typically, these materials are sold on to architectural yards or consigned to auction houses such as ourselves, completing the recycling process.
It follows that our role in enabling sustainability for other organisations is a crucial one β and goes far beyond a policy statement that lacks any form of follow-through.β
